For more than half
a decade, Patricia Javier has been one of the most famous and successful
sexy stars in the Philippines. Born Genesis Canlapan
in Antipolo, Rizal, she got her start in showbiz at age 16 on Kuya Germs'
That's Entertainment. Later she spent a year modeling underwear in fashion
shows, and having thus become accustomed to parading around in nothing but
sexy undies, she came to favor bra and panty "costumes" which she still wears
at most of her public appearances to this day. People are so used to seeing
her in skimpy attire that on accasion, when she attends a business meeting
wearing a long-sleeved blouse, she often goes unrecognized! Besides live
modeling, Patricia has also graced the pages of FHM and many other
magazines.
Her film career was launched
in 1999 with "Ang Kabit ni Mrs. Montero," which was an adaptation of the
controversial D. H. Lawrence novel, "Lady Chatterly's Lover." Other adult
films followed, including "Unfaithful Wife 2," "Marital Rape," and "Gamitan."
But not all her movies have sexual themes; she has also made comedy films
like "Matalino Man ang Matsing" with Eddie Garcia and Willy Revillame,
and 2003's "AB Normal College" in which she played the daughter of a school
canteen owner who falls in love with Ogie Alcasid. She enjoys doing comedies
because "It's really fun and you get to act kooky on the set."
The newest and somewhat
unexpected part of Patricia Javier's career is her successful entry into
the world of music. She had always enjoyed singing;
she was a member of the choir in Antipolo and as a child
was encouraged to sing for her guitar-playing father and his friends--Pinoy
rock numbers, and songs by the Beatles, Asin, and Imelda Papin. But she didn't
know if the public would accept her as a professional singer; she was
not sure she would be taken seriously. She needn't have worried though; her
debut album "PJ" was a best-seller and her first major concert, "Too Hot
to Handle" in February 2003 at the Folk Arts Theater, proved to be
a big success as well. To prepare for the show she took voice lessons
from jazz singer Kevynn Lettau, and also brushed up on her dancing.
Like other bold stars, Patricia
has from time to time become the target of criticism by censors and "moralist"
groups. Her popular steamy VCD "Bare Naked" was scrutinized twice by the
Videogram Regulatory Board. Then there was the time the Philippine Long Distance
Telephone Company set up "Lovenotes," a hotline where callers could hear
Patricia telling sexy stories. Some government officials voiced their objections
not only to the hotline but also to the Lovenotes phone cards issued by the
PLDT, some featuring bare-breasted photos of Patricia and other bold stars.
Another controversy concerned the music video for the carrier single of
Patricia's "PJ" album, "Siya Ba ang Dahilan." MTV Asia claimed it was too
sexually explicit to broadcast and asked for a toned-down version. The Philippine
Alliance Against Pornography wanted to have her Folk Arts Theater concert
banned when word got out that the show would include a shower scene and
a bedroom scene onstage. In the end though the show went on and the
proposed ban only generated even more interest in the event.
Recently Patricia used some
of her earnings to build a luxury resort in her hometown of Antipolo. Villa
Patricia has ten luxurious air-conditioned guest
rooms plus larger rooms that can be used for weddings or other events. She
is careful with her money and has some saved up for the future, not only
for herself but for her family too.
As for Patricia's romantic
life, she had a four-year relationship with model and TV host Marc Nelson,
and she credits him with convincing her to do sexy roles to make a name for
herself in showbiz. Although they went their separate ways in 2002, they
remain good friends. Even their break-up was not entirely a bad thing, because
as Pat says it taught her to be stronger and more mature. Her current boyfriend
is chiropractor Dr. Rob Walcher, whom she met while on a US concert tour
in 2003. He is based in San Diego and there was talk that they would marry
there early in 2005, but the wedding has been called off for now. Rob has
been to the Philippines twice and has met her parents, and recently the couple
had even been house-hunting together in California. But the relationship
has been mostly long-distance, and they realize they have to get to know
each other better before tying the knot. Patricia will stay in the US awhile
and do some shows while she's here. She will have Valentine shows Feb. 11
in San Diego and Feb. 13 in San Francisco, and on the East Coast she will
have a show in Metuchen NJ February 18 and a New York City show the following
day. She will also be appearing with The Hunks in Alameda, California on
March 27.
