The Buzz in L.A.

Los Angeles, California - It's been a couple of months since I tossed up some news from here (the latest, about the successful kick-off L.A. concert of Regine and Ogie at the Grand Olympic). Well, turned out the whole tour was an overwhelming success. Other concerts after that (including the "secret concerts" floated around L.A.) haven't been as successful (profit-wise) since early January! "Superstar" Nora Aunor and Kuh Ledesma's back-to-back U.S. tour should be a hit (happening at the Hollywood Palladium on June 19th). The two icons' dedicated followers are keeping all the tabs on fire. "I've never experienced such overwhelming response. Ticketmaster and I are haggling for the best seats. The reservations were almost half-filled and I haven't even distributed the tickets to the outlets, yet!" said Vic Perez of V Entertainment Group. This is the fastest ticket-selling concert I've handled," he said.

Also on the concert scene, Gary V's Shrine Auditorium concert (June 11), with special guest, international singer Brian McKnight should create a big fuss in the Fil-Am community. The Greatest Hitmakers (Nonoy Zuniga, Rey Valera, Marco Sison, Hajji Alejandro and Rico J. Puno) shouldn't be just a trend, either, considering their last gig at the Olympic Auditorium (minus Nonoy and Marco) was a hit (the concert is slated on July 10, again, at the Grand Olympic Auditorium).

From hearsay, negotiations for combining mega-artists Kuh-Regine-Martin-Gary are underway for a February 2005 mega-concert at the Staples Center. A Dolphy-Zsa Zsa concert with Mahal and Mura is also on the way (July 17) at the Grand Olympic Auditorium. Heard also is that Viva is mounting the U.S. tour schedule of newest singing sensation Sarah Geronimo ("Star for A Night" winner) with Mark Bautista and Star in A Million's Eric Santos and Sheryn Regis, together with Side A Band.

I was at the MGM Grand last May 8, covering the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Marquez fight (see pics from my web: www.picturetrail.com/olivercarnayphotos). Lani Misalucha was booed by a group of Mexicans carrying their flag, while singing the Philippine National Anthem. "Shut the f_ _ck up!" they shouted. But Lani didn't lose her composures. She turned her head towards them and mustered Filipinos to sing with her. Her rendition gave a thunderous applause at the end of the song. Martin Nievera and Cesar Montano watched. I saw Lara Morena at the MGM Grand Hotel lobby that day as well.

Speaking of Lani Misalucha, the Diva (who is sporting a very svelte figure - "thanks to Slimfast", she said) denied rumors that she sold her properties in Manila. Although plans to migrate in the U.S. are possible (because she's planning to enroll her kids in school here), she is still returning to Manila come July. Together with her two daughters and husband Noli, she stayed at the luxurious Penthouse of Rio Grande Hotel in Vegas, courtesy of Cecile and Mendrei Leelin (owner of famous Goldilocks Bake Shop and Restaurant chain) during the Pacquiao fight.

Paolo Montalban and Gina Alajar both received recognition at the 9th ULIRAN AWARDS held at the New Otani Hotel (downtown Los Angeles) on May 15, 2004. The tall, dark and handsome actor, who will next be seen in the upcoming Miramax Films' "The Great Raid" (with Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, and Filipino actor Cesar Montano), is Broadway-bound, starring as one of the major leads, sometime this September (more on this in later issues).

Gina Alajar, who received ULIRAN AWARDS' Lifetime Achievement Award, recently finished a show in Norwalk, CA with Bernardo Bernardo and Chanda Romero entitled "The X-Files". Gina also mimicked Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in "Vote Who?" a spoof comedy play about the aspiring Philippine "presidentiables", held at the Celebrity International Centre in Hollywood last weekend.

More Fil-Am talents in the news:

At the "Easter Eggs-plosion" event courtesy of Radio Disney AM 1110 a few weeks ago, held at the Johnny Carson Park in Burbank, CA, I was surprised to see how many fans flocked to see Lalaine. The Filipino-Spanish superstar who plays Miranda Sanchez in tv-series "Lizzie McGuire" has been doing rounds promoting her new CD album "Haunted" (see her awesome web site at www.lalaine.net). If plans push through, she might visit Manila next year.

And speaking of Fil-Am talents who have made a career in Hollywood, Tia Carrere (she's a Filipina raised in Hawaii) has recently been awarded the Visionary Award by East West Players (the prime source of Asian-American theatre performers in Hollywood) during its 38th annual star-studded dinner-gala held at Universal City's Hilton Hotel. At the event, I interviewed Jennifer Padua-Selma (who's currently starring in "Aladdin" at California's Disney Adventure) and Filipino-Chinese Harlemm Lee (winner of NBC's reality show "FAME", who currently has a CD out in the market: "Introducing: Harlemm Lee" available at Wright Records (check out www.harlemmlee.com). Spotted also was Giselle Tongi, who is currently starring in "The Days When Cocaine Was King" at the American Renegade Theatre in North Hollywood.

People might not know that a lot of working press media are mostly Fil-Ams (publicists, crews for tv stations, cartoonists for Disney, scriptwriters, etc.). Though, you don't see them much because they work behind the scenes. A good friend of mine, Fusion PR's owner and prime Fil-Am mainstream publicist, Rembrandt Flores, had his birthday celebration at the Cinespace Dinner Theatre Club & Restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. (a favorite hang-out of A-list superstars where Hollywood parties are always set up), atop the famous IVAR Club, which is one of the latest trendy dance clubs along Hollywood Blvd. Joji Dingcong (manager of Martin Nievera, Cogie Domingo, Vina Morales, etc.) was partying to the hilt. I introduced him to some other "wannabes" after bragging about his meeting with Warner Bros. and William Morris Agency, Vina Morales in tow for his plan on Vina's mainstream career. Later, we bumped into each other again, at Sanamluang Thai, a favorite eatery on Hollywood Blvd.

Visual Communications' annual Asian Pacific Film and Video Festival (April 29 - May 6), see www.vconline.org) screened such films "Magnifico", "Noon at Ngayon", "Web Diva", and "Keka" during its eight-day festival. Dra. Vicki Belo (who plans to bring her trademark line of cosmetics, named "Flawless", to the U.S.) attended the screening of Director Quark Henares', her son's film, Keka, at the Archlight Theatre. Tikoy Aguiluz (Web Diva) was also in town for the festival, while Maryo de los Reyes (Magnifico) opted to go to New York for the Tribeca Film Festival.

Dra. Vicki Belo stayed at Peninsula Hotel and met with Monet Lu, and famous L.A. philanthropist Vivien Fermin (who hosted our Crustacean dinner with friends Millie and Atty. Michael Gurfinkel), together with Obagi VP Rep Angeline, and Lucy Babaran (of Career Advantage). The beauty expert and controversial surgeon will be back next week with Kris Aquino for the opening of First Quadrant in Milpitas, California.

Comic Lab, the latest wave of entertainment slowly infiltrating the L.A. entertainment scene, had its initial presentation a few weeks ago at Bistro Kalesa in Panorama City. Andrew de Real, the man behind the famous Malate spot "The Library" and "Comic Lab" in Manila, together with columnist and S-Files rep Rey Pumaloy supervised the initial presentation. Other Manila-based talents (including Rey "Jaya" Kilay) are expected to arrive to do their one-of-a-kind comic antics. Lorna Buehler, president of Comiclab USA, Inc. saw the potential of exploring these Sing-A-long Masters in the mainstream. Her goal is to have a Comiclab venue in New York, Vancouver, San Francisco, Seattle, and other corners in United States, where we can show this form of entertainment. More next 'ish!
