Medfield, Massachusetts: It was a two-day celebration for Luzviminda Dizon Maurillo's debut, though it spanned a couple of months apart. The first celebration was on her actual birthday, November 21, 2005. Close relatives joined Maurillo and her Mom Nila with younger brother Carl for an intimate dinner.

The second celebration, which was the real debut party with all the trimmings including the traditional cotillion de honor (though shortened and was choreographed especially for Luz and Carl by their Tita Eunice Williams) was held January 20, 2006 at the American Legion Hall in this city. This time, her family, relatives, close friends and extended family at Boston's Iskwelahang Pilipino (IP), associates and friends were with the debutante. Luz wore a coral gown with spaghetti straps and exquisite embroidery adorned with silver glitter.

The celebration sported the traditional 18 roses and candles. The husband and wife team of Ricky and Gina Muyuela emceed the short program. Luz's close friends from IP (Engot Crew: sisters Angela and Rhiandra Bhoge with Miki Aristorenas) performed a song for her. From the way all the attendees smiled and danced, everyone seemed to have enjoyed the genuine display of friendship.

After dancing, amid all the smiling faces, the debutante thanked everyone who made her party a success. She then pondered her plans for the next five years, of finishing her education. "I'd like to get married eventually and have my own children, but that won't happen till much later," she said.

The party ended by midnight leaving Luz a couple days of rest before heading back to UMass Amherst where she is a pre-med student.

Concerts and (good) causes = CJ Gems handmade jewelry

Boston, MA: "Purple is my favorite color," said Rachel Alejandro at the pre-concert meet and greet early December. Alejandro was a recipient of a set of CJ Gems design by Ibanag jewelry designer, Genevieve Ramos-Bueno. She joins the list of happy recipients including Allison DuBois, Frances Rivera, Joey Albert and Jam Morales. "I wore one at the concert," said Mrs. Estrella L. Ramos, mother of the designer who is in Boston for the launch of her daughter's "ethnic line" jewelry. Two evenings earlier, Ramos-Bueno announced the launch of her ethnic line jewelry to benefit Mother Superior Ma. Fatima R. Senarillos' Nazareth Home for Streetchildren initiative. Of note, available at the global simultaneous launch are Dr. Gay Estrella Bolante in Manila, Grace Oshima in Japan, Remy Ulep in Italy and Bella Luyun, New York. All may be contacted via e-mail: caylajill_gems@yahoo.com.

In July 2005, Patricia Javier showed her love for CJ gems by acquiring 2 sets of designs. Dressed in her signature sexy outfits for her concert, PJ admired the wearable art from CJ gem's handcrafted jewelry collection. Ramos-Bueno is a former computer programmer. Her new ethnic line jewelry emphasizes natural materials for casual wear. The handmade jewelry combines natural materials, earthy colors and rich textures for business casual and weekend wear. CJ Gems are for those that like wearable jewelry. Ethnic ambiguity is hot in fashion jewelry and "the ethnic line is my interpretation of the trend. My designs appeal to everyone from the fashion-conscious adult to high school students", said Ramos-Bueno. The designs are playful enough to appeal to young adults (casual and affordable). More mature adults will appreciate that the designs blend with weekend wear and work attire. In addition to natural fibers, other materials featured in the ethnic line are seashells, wood, coconut shell, and a variety of ethnic beads.

THE TRIUMPH OF GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY IN THE PHILIPPINES

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS—Governor Ma. Cielo Grace Magno Padaca spoke recently at the Starr auditorium, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in this city. Padaca spoke to a mix of Harvard University students and Fil-Am leaders in the New England area about how she defeated the 40-year-old political dynasty on a shoestring budget. Sponsored by the Kennedy School of Government Southeast Asia Caucus and the Harvard Philippine Forum, Padaca also touched on the current Philippine political issues.

Padaca is the governor of Isabela, the second largest province in the Philippines, located up north in Cagayan Valley. She was elected in 2004. She is a minority among Filipino Politicians in that she is not from a politically connected family. The Catholic Church and listeners of Bombo Radyo (where she was a broadcast journalist for 14 years) supported Padaca’s bid and had largely been attributed for her success.

Having suffered from Polio in her childhood, she alternately used crutches and a wheelchair. Padaca’s recent US trip succeeded in uniting the Filipino American community to rally behind her and put the province of Isabela visibly in the world map. Padaca appealed for help to address teacher shortage and children’s welfare (malnutrition, daycare needs and repair of school buildings). Tourism and investment opportunities were also discussed, citing that the province will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2006.
