| VINA MORALES
Unlike
many superstars in the Philippines, Vina Morales is not only an actress but
is also a multi-award-winning singer. What distinguishes her from many other
superstars is that she has received accolades from the entertainment fields
of television, film, and music. Born on October 17, 1975, as Sharon Magdayao,
Morales began her career as a child actress in the Philippines making her
debut in 1986, for the film Nakagapos na Puso (1986) with her idol Sharon
Cuneta. Through her natural acting ability, she never lost sight of the first
talent that got her discovered, her singing. After performing numerous Filipino
standards and Carpenters covers, in 1995, Morales released her self-titled
debut album, "Easy to Love". Mostly eschewing the middle-of-the-road arrangements
of her contemporaries for more energetic numbers, Morales' first full-length
was considered to be a promising musical start. Her U.S. multi-concert tour
which began from 2002 until early 2007, she returned to television on the
ABS-CBN program, Maria Flordeluna (2007) where she played the main title
character's mother, Elvira. Then on August 12, 2007 she won the first ever
Ikon Asean awards competition, a regional musical showcase to recognize talent
from prominent Asian countries in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Currently Vina can be seen playing the role of Mercedes in the ABS-CBN teleserye
Agua Bendita.

THE BOYFRIENDS
Taking
their cue from foreign superstars the Bee Gees, famous for that hard, crackling,
noose-around-your-neck falsetto, Gary Arriola and Bob Guzman, collectively
known as The Boyfriends, not only sing like their foreign idols, but were
also packaged like them. Where other local artists are eager to deny any
deliberate attempts to ape foreign artists, the Boyfriends are honest enough
to admit the considerable influence of the Bee Gees over them.
Prior to their rise to fame
as the Boyfriends, members Gary and Bob both were working for Octo Arts,
which at that time was still in the process of becoming the recording giant
that it is now.
The ultimate boy band of
the seventies, their songs are generally confessions of love and yearning,
mostly unrequited, in plain simple lyrics that sound like they were written
by pups in love. While the Bee Gees sometimes stray from the simple mindedness
of their love ditties to take a glance at the deeper and wider scope of life
and living, the Boyfriends would rather sound superfluous than pretentious,
sticking to an established formula and make no apologies for it.
As with most pop hits, the
Boyfriends songs have refrains that are sung over and over until the melody
sticks to the minds of the listeners. Their first hit "Dahil Mahal Kita"
has two catchy themes that are sung aloud and repeatedly, other famous songs
that went down in OPM history were Salawahan," "Bakit Labis Kitang
Mahal," "Nais Kong Malaman Mo," "First Love Never Dies" and the classic disco
hit, "Sumayaw, Sumunod.
With Gary, the lead vocals
and acoustic guitarist and Bob on vocals and lead guitar, the Boyfriends
harmoniously went on to become one of the pioneers of pinoy pop, and their
money-making, disco-dancing hits would later on define the exuberant music
scene of the 70s.
