| Lilly Amber Bolandrina, 2,
wins Douglas Octoberfest Art Contest By Gretheline Bolandrina Douglas, Massachusetts: Harvest time came in a full swing this year for the Bolandrina Family at the annual Douglas Octoberfest, October 2, 2004. Two-year-old Lilly Amber Bolandrina won the Art Contest for the under 4 age category. Her artwork, framed in black acrylic double-sided shadow box with a yellow gingham border was titled "Color, color." Bolandrina received the first place blue ribbon. Her winning piece, along with other artwork, was exhibited at the Simon Fairfield Public Library. Octoberfest festival attendees voted in the contest which included one for art, photography, quilting, pumpkin painting and carving, chowder and cookie baking. Crafts, food vendors, children's games, and contests lined Main Street where traffic was closed from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Each year the town of Douglas offers the festival as a way of celebrating community while assisting local civic and nonprofit organizations.
A parade began at 9 AM led by the VFW Post 7554 Color Guard followed by the Douglas High School Award-Winning marching band. Rev. John Picard from the East Douglas United Methodist Church delivered the Blessing for the Day. New England antique and classic cars were also featured as well as members of the new Douglas Community Emergency Response and Animal Disaster Preparedness groups. Super Shag Productions of Waltham and Boston performed at the Main Stage; their repertoire included music of the Point N' Swing Big Jazz Band. This dance ensemble, featured in the Boston Globe, Channel 5's "Chronicle," Dance Beat, Modern Bride and elsewhere, offers instructional and entertaining ballroom dance numbers with pizzazz. The Heritage String Band, dressed in period clothing, played songs from the 1850s, 60's and 70's. The Douglas High School Chorus and Majik sang songs as well as Ron Tetreau's Rock and Roll band "Sidewalk Therapy" and Wes & Joe, Drew Carey, and Rich Anderson (Contemporary acoustic.) A Second Stage featured street entertainment by Henry Lappen, the Juggler. Lappen defies the laws of gravity, is considered armed and dangerously funny with his apparatus of balls, clubs, rings and even flaming torches. Other performers/performances included the dance teams of Dance Sensations and JoAnn Warren's Dance Studio's, the Family Karate Center of Whitinsville, a professional skateboard demo from Eastern Boarders, Bay State Cheerleaders and the clown, Lorraine Mason. Many other non-profits groups including the Boy Scouts, Dog Orphans, local churches, school groups and individuals had booths and offerings during the day. Family fun included a free sack race. |
